Customers who agree to participate will be able to track the delivery vehicle through GPS along with the upgraded version of Domino’s Tracker. They will also receive text messages as and when the self-driving vehicle approaches customer will have to meet it in the street. Then it will guide them on how to retrieve their pizza using a unique code to unlock the Domino’s “Heatwave Compartment” inside the vehicle.

Future queries

It’s a clever marketing move by both the companies but it also gives rise to a vital question which needs a little attention compared to the technical challenge of autonomy: How will humans interact with driverless cars? How far are people willing to go to meet the car?

Technology is providing us with a huge promise like fewer crashes, more convenience, less congestion but all this is possible only when people actually want the things in their lives…

Ford takes on collaboration

Vice President of Ford autonomous SherifMarakby said “we will be looking at how customers respond to this new experience, which will require them to interact with the self-driving car instead of a delivery person-walking out to the vehicle he will just walk to answer their front door”

Domino’s takes on collaboration

President of Domino’s USA said delightfully that “we’re interested to learn what people think about this type of delivery and the majority of our questions are the last 50 feet of the delivery experience. We made to make sure the interface is clear and simple. We need to understand if a customer’s experience is different if the car is parked in the driveway versus next to the curb. Company’s testing research department is focused on the aim that someday they willmake deliveries with self-driving vehicles as seamless and customer-friendly as possible.

Domino’s has been into the idea of autonomous vehicles for a few years now. It has already announced the tests of delivery robots in Australia and in Germany but those trials were in partnership with smaller robotics start-ups, and now this self-driving cat test involves more traditional car-maker.

Ford and Domino’s completed preliminary testing of the delivery process using the vehicle in self-driving mode at Mcity and the city of Ann Arbor has been supportive of the testing process.

Hence, now order a pizza without any guilt. Moreover, take comfort in the idea that you may be helping shape the future of transportation and you will get your pizza not at your door step but on a street step.
